What Is Matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from shade-grown green tea leaves (Tencha) from the Camellia sinensis plant.

Unlike steeped green tea, where you discard the leaves after brewing, Matcha allows you to consume the whole leaf — meaning you get more antioxidants, amino acids, and nutrients in every sip.

Shade-grown cultivation

Tea plants are shaded for several weeks before harvest, increasing chlorophyll and amino acids and giving matcha its vibrant green color.

Steamed, dried & finely milled

Leaves are steamed to preserve color and flavor, dried without rolling, then stone-milled into a smooth powder.

No steeping required

Matcha dissolves directly into water, milk, or recipes for effortless preparation.

What makes Matcha so special?

Matcha is a traditional Japanese green tea made from finely ground tea leaves that are fully consumed, delivering an intense flavor profile and a naturally high concentration of antioxidants, amino acids, and chlorophyll, sourced from selected regions in Japan and known for its smooth taste and balanced umami.

A Brief History of Matcha

Matcha’s roots trace back over 1,000 years. Buddhist monks brought the powdered tea process from China to Japan in the 12th century, where it became a cornerstone of Zen practice.

By the 16th century, the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu) had transformed Matcha into an art form, symbolizing mindfulness, harmony, and respect. Today, Matcha continues to be celebrated in Japan while also enjoying worldwide popularity as both a cultural ritual and a superfood.

Understanding Matcha Grades

Not all matcha is created equal. Grade reflects how the matcha is intended to be enjoyed:

  1. Ceremonial Grade – Bright, vibrant green color, Smooth delicate flavor with minimal bitterness, best enjoyed traditionally with water – hot or iced – ideal for mindful, standalone matcha drinking. Try our Ceremonial Matcha from Match LOVE.
  2. Premium Grade – Rich green color with a balanced, full-bodied taste, smooth with gentle vegetal notes, refined texture that dissolves easily. Excellent for both straight matcha and lightly sweetened drinks. Try our Oi Ocha Organic Matcha.
  3. Latte Grade – Slightly bolder flavor designed to stand up to your favorite creamer, more pronounced tea character when blended, maintains matcha presence in dairy or plant-based lattes. Ideal for everyday matcha lattes and café-style drinks. Try our Matcha Green Tea.
  4. Culinary Grade – Strong, robust matcha flavor. More assertive bitterness and designed for smoothies, baking. It adds color and depth to food and blended applications. Try our Culinary Matcha Green Tea.

Naturally Rich in Antioxidants

Matcha is especially rich in Vitamin C and catechins, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which may help fight free radicals and support overall wellness.

Balanced Energy

Matcha contains caffeine, but thanks to L-theanine, it delivers a calm, focused energy rather than the crash you might get from coffee.
